Music Talk
« on: February 11, 2012, 09:47:58 PM »
I just saw on TV a few minutes ago that Whitney Houston died. She was one of those once-in-a-generation voices. She got messed up with the wrong crowd, specifically her ex-husband Bobby Brown, and now she's gone at 48. So sad. RIP.

Yeah, there's nothing quite like it.

Everything from New Wave to Hair Metal in ten years.

I just wanted to pass along a cool music service: Spotify. It allows you to listen to basically listen to any artist's catalog for free. You just have to deal with ads every few songs and time limits after the trial period runs out. There's a couple pay versions. The "Unlimited" plan let you listen to the songs without ads and there's no time limits, and the "Premium" plan allows you to listen offline. I found out about it on Facebook and I like it so far.

Maybe its just me... but does anyone else listen to off the wall silly stuff like some of They Might Be Giants early stuff?  Or bands that broke out during a genre phase and the died off, like Squirrel Nut Zippers in the mid to late 90's?  and Of course the stranger/quirky songs the Beatles put out, like Maxwell's Sliver Hammer? (had the stuck in my head all of last night)

I'm a big Beatles fan. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is a cool tune. Actually, all of Abbey Road is pretty damn good.

I agree, my friend!   I would LOVE to get the completely anthology!   Somewhere I have one of their 2-disc, decade set.  There was a red one and a blue one.  I have the red one.  When I'm Sixty-Four is one of my favorites but I think that's due to the clarinet and bass clarinet used in it.   I really have a soft spot for the short quirky tunes of theirs.

But if you like big band/"swing" music- as everyone was referring to it int he mid-90's, you'll enjoy Squirrel Nut Zippers.  I fell in love with them, but then again I've always loved big band. (if any one is interested, PM me I'll give you some links to some of their stuff, my personal favorites of theirs and so on)

I brought up They Might Be Giants because I stumbled across 'Istanbul, Not Constantinople' and 'Particle Man'!!    I'm such a dork.

I used to be an avid music listener. Then something happened. It was the mid-90s. I was between coming home from school and getting ready for work. VH1 was playing Hootie and the Blowfish. At point, it all seemed horribly pointless and I turned off the TV. I've not seen MTV or VH1 since, and I just really don't care anymore. It's not that I thought Hootie was so bad, but it was just.... just... I don't know. Like Mitt Romney for conservatives.

Anyway, I certainly don't hate music, and I'll listen on occasion, but I don't have any passion for it whatsoever.
