Comic Books?
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:01:56 PM »
Anyone here read any comic books old or new?

I recently read Gardner Fox and Joe Kubert's 1960s Hawkman run. One of my all-time favorites.

I grew up on Belgian and French comics, which are a far cry from the American comic book tradition.

I guess the closest thing to a  superhero that came in those comics was a diminutive Gaul who gained superstrength when he drank a magic potion. The superstrength was used to keep the Romans from taking over his village.

I've read that comics are very popular in Europe and that millions of people read them. Is this correct?

In the US, I think it's been estimated that about 300,000 buy comics on a monthly basis nowadays.

That Gaul premise sounds interesting. Was it done as a serious or humorous comic?

Yes, comics are very popular in Europe, but they're different. I think they tend to be less fantastic (as in, less different from our mundane world) than American or Japanese comics are. I have no idea what the European comic market is like in terms of sales.

The format is also slightly different in that the issues tend to be less frequent but thicker.  There is not a lot of 'to be continued...' the way American comics tend to be (as I understand them), so each issue tends to be a full story with the same characters as previous issues.

Astérix, the comic that I cited earlier, is funny but not meant to be slapstick comedy. It's somewhat-comedic adventure, I suppose. It's set in the time of Julius Caesar, and Caesar makes frequent appearances.

I've heard of Astérix, I've just never looked into it.

What kind of comic fan am I?  ;D

I'm heavily into comics. I actually make them! Not really into mainstream superhero stuff at all anymore though. I'm currently reading Craig Thompson's Habibi.

One thing that I've always been disappointed with is that there are very few good Star Wars comics.

It's cool that you should mention that one. My wife just went to a Craig Thompson book signing where she bought Habibi. She's been reading it.

I read the beginning of it, and 'wow', that's definitely something powerful and very feminine for a male author, I thought.

I actually have an observation about American comic books nowadays. Most of them are crap. You read them once and throw them in the pile never to be read again. That wasn't the case with comics when I was growing up (80s). I read the same issues so many times they started to pull apart at the staples. Now, this may be a product having "seen it all" in my old age but I actually can go back and read those old comics and get the same feeling again. Besides, new comics give you less bang for your buck. An average issue is $3+ nowadays compared to $1 twenty years ago.

Dude, you sound like an old man. Your price numbers sound like they're not exceptionally off from inflation.

I can't speak for much (any) of the superhero stuff, but I do think there are interesting graphic novels being produced; at least based on what my wife shows me. There's that title that Blue just mentioned, which looks pretty amazing.

What sort of audience are the comics you're disappointed with trying to cater to?

The comics I read should be catering to kids ages 8-14, but they are catering to adults ages 28-34.

I've been reading a lot of comics lately. I procured most of the graphic novels for the Blackest Night story arc in the Green Lantern series. I also received a few graphic novels for Christmas: a Thor and and Avengers compilation, and Batman: RIP. The Batman one was good, but disappointed me because I don't get the chance to follow comics like I'd like to, and I was hoping this was the one that detailed the events of Bruce Wayne's death at the hands of Darkseid. I only found out THAT much about it in the novels I bought...but Bruce Wayne is SUCH a pivotal character. Even though he's paranoid, he is one of the Big Three, and affects EVERYONE...especially the other Two (Superman and Wonder Woman). I was hoping to find more information on it. Plus, with Red Robin's insistence that Bruce isn't truly dead, I'd like to see more about it. And let's face it...comic characters these days seem to be dying and resurrecting with a semblance of regularity. Since Batman is my oldest favorite character, I'd really like to see Bruce come back. And HOW...lol

I won't spoil anything for you.  ;D

I picked up two Thor trade paperbacks with some Christmas money. I love Olivier Coipel's artwork.

Back in '93, when they did the whole changeover to Kyle Rayner as the sole Green Lantern, I actually created my own GL. I placed it in 2070, and had Kyle still the GL. I made that due to properties of the new ring Ganthet created greatly extending Kyle's lifespan. I thought it a cool idea; my GL ended up absorbing his battery and getting Sinestro's yellow ring. Keep in mind, this is all before the Sinestro Corps came out.

A friend of mine at work wrote out first a six-issue storyline for him, then a second. He went so far as to pitch the idea to Rick Mars, who was writing GL at the time. He said it would have to be submitted, then looked at by an editor who weeds out the crap. Then another editor looks at em for possibilities. Then another editor looks at em for good, workable ideas. THEN it can get written the way they want it. He said mine would be an Elseworlds, since it was outside the current timeline/storyline of the comic. We never did end up submitting it. I still think it a was a good idea though. I've always thought the GLs to be wayyyyyy underdeveloped and held back. My GL was more along the lines in power/ability of those who are entrusted with the Ion power.

*shrugs* Oh well.

The best book by Marvel or DC I've read in the last year has been Avengers: Children's Crusade. I've been collecting the individual issues, but I'll pick up the trade when it comes out. It's that good.
